"Иметь - значит быть": социальная стратификация и материальные блага

Стратификация общества по степени богатства и количеству собственности сопровождается социальным неравенством - фундаментальным признаком современного западного общества. Очевидно, что материальные блага играют важную роль в нашей повседневной социальной жизни - причем не только в рекламе и телевизионных программах, но также и в способах нашего восприятия самих себя и других людей. В материальных благах, таких как стереосистема или машина, заключены не только их очевидные функциональные или коммерческие назначения. В противоположность положениям классической утилитарной экономики, они формируют сложную систему социальных символов, несущих информацию об их владельцах (Douglas and Isherwood, 1979).
